Driving in the Rain
April showers may bring May flowers, but can also cause many crashes. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, about 21% of all motor vehicle crashes involve hazardous weather and about 418,000 people are injured each year in weather-related motor vehicle crashes. Whenever you drive, you assume a duty of care to others on the road to drive responsibly. This means if it is raining, you must drive with reasonable caution to protect yourself and others driving in these dangerous conditions. When driving in the rain, take the following precautions:
- Slow down
- Ensure your headlights are on
- Avoid slamming on your break to prevent hydroplaning
- Use your windshield wipers
- Maintain distance between yourself and the car in front of you
- If conditions are really bad, pull over until the weather passes
